About this collection

Capybara with a hat: hoods, caps and fruit on the head

The capybara with hat is the animal's signature look, and it started with real photos. In Japanese zoos, capybaras soaking in winter hot springs sometimes end up with a yuzu fruit sitting on the head, and that image became a whole family of plush. This collection gathers every capybara plush that wears something on top: hoods that turn it into another animal, caps and sun hats, party hats, and the fruit that started it all.

The Little Sun capybara with orange on head is the direct tribute, with the orange sewn into its crown so it never falls off. The hooded ones are the biggest group: the Honey Hug bear hood, the frog, the bunny, the piggy, the chick, the dino with its spine crest, the Deep Blue shark hat and the Sweet Berry strawberry hood, most of them removable so the capybara underneath can go plain. Then there are the caps and hats proper: the green tennis cap, the pink baseball cap, the straw sun hat, the black graduation cap, the yellow crown and the happy birthday party hat. The Pond Pal skips the hat and wears a duckling instead.

Every capybara plush with a hat is a collectible for ages 14 and up. The product page says whether the hat or hood lifts off or is sewn on, and lists the exact height of every option.

Removable hood or sewn on hat: how to choose

  • Removable hoods (bear, frog, bunny, piggy, chick, dino, shark, strawberry, teddy) give you two plush in one: the character, and the plain capybara underneath.
  • Sewn on hats (the orange, the crown, the graduation cap) stay put, which is the point when the hat is the joke.
  • Fruit on the head is its own category. The story behind it is in our article on why capybaras have oranges on their heads.

Sizes run from 4 in keychains to 15 in hooded capybaras, and several hoods come in three heights. For the capybaras in full outfits rather than just a hat, see the dressed capybara plush collection. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, removing the hood first, and air dry.

Why do capybaras have oranges on their heads?

Because zoos in Japan float yuzu and other citrus in the warm pools where their capybaras soak around the winter solstice, and the fruit sometimes ends up on a head. Photos of that became the famous image, and our Little Sun plush has the orange sewn into its crown so it never falls off.

Can I take the hat off a capybara plush?

On most of the hooded ones, yes: the bear, frog, bunny, piggy, chick, dino, shark and strawberry hoods lift off. The orange, the crown and the graduation cap are sewn on. Each product page states which it is.

What is the difference between a capybara with a hat and a dressed capybara?

A hat collection item wears something on its head only. A dressed capybara wears an outfit on its body, such as the shark suit, the bee suit, the beach shirt or the burger bun. Some plush appear in both collections.

Which capybara plush with a hat is the smallest?

The 4 in keychains with headphones or a party hat, and the 5 in minis in a crown, a ball cap or a graduation cap. Most hooded capybaras start at 9 in.
